Better Broadband Subsidy Scheme
The Better Broadband Scheme has been extended for a further year until 31 December 2019, ensuring that a subsidised basic broadband installation remains available to eligible applicants.
In support of this extension, BDUK is taking the opportunity to improve the scheme’s processes and functionality in order to deliver a more efficient and effective service.
The existing application process will remain in place until midday on 31st December 2018 and, following a brief pause to implement the necessary changes, BDUK aim to re-launch the Better Broadband Voucher Scheme in January 2019.
The Better Broadband Subsidy Scheme has been developed by the UK government to provide access to a subsidised broadband installation to homes and businesses that are unable to access a broadband service with a download speed of at least 2Mbps and that will not benefit from the superfast broadband roll out.
The subsidy provides support towards the cost of the equipment and installation of a satellite or wireless broadband service, up to the value of £350.
If you currently experience poor broadband speeds, or are unable to obtain an affordable broadband service at all, the scheme will provide you with access to a basic broadband service that will offer speeds of at least 2Mbps.
You can check your broadband download speed over the BT Openreach network using the ADSL checker. Broadband services may also be available from Virgin Media or other providers.
You can check whether superfast broadband is available at your address using the BDUK superfast broadband checker.
If you take advantage of this scheme your household or business will still be eligible for a superfast broadband service in the future.
Applications to the Better Broadband Subsidy Scheme can be made until the end of 2019.
If you're eligible for the subsidy you'll be able to choose a service from any of the retail service providers that are part of the scheme. Each of them will offer a variety of packages based on the amount of data you need and the speed of the connection.
